I wonder if you can help...I am a novice surfer and would like to enrol in a surf camp for a week to 10 days somewhere in Asia, as I want to meet up with my girlfriend over the New Year, and she is currently working in Tokyo. Ideally I would like shore breaks, warm water and warm weather (wouldn't we all!). If you could suggest something suitable or where to look I would be eternally grateful.

Ludo mate - not too familiar with the shapers in this country but judging from the quality that I've seen in the local surf shops you dont need to go far to find a decent one. It is vital that you talk to them. Tell them your style of surfing, problems you experience and ideal type of wave and they would be more suited to advise. If I may suggest, stay away from swallows. Swallows are more suited for very sucky, not so big, reef breaks. You lose a lot of thrust on your bottom turn (probably the most important manouver on a wave)and is only realy effective for slashy turns once you've built up enough speed. (swallows are great if you ride a twin fin or a quad)My personal opinion is a regular squash tale. Anyway Bro, good to hear you had a good time in Bali. I had it 6 to 8' and that was on my honeymoon. Almost killed myself. See ya in the green room.

TSS, Thanks for the reply. Yes it definately looks as though I need to go the custom made 6'8 to 6'10,3-3.5 thick with a swallow tail and a bit of extra volume in the nose. Perhaps even a "fish". If that doesn't work then I might heve to call it a day!! Can you recommend a shaper whom I could trust? As for Impossibles I was amazed at the quality, consistency, power and speed of the wave, even when it was small at 2ft.On my backhand and at 3-4ft low tide, it was perhaps too much for me with the paddling problems that I am having at present. I also paddled out from Bingin (which is in itself also an incredible wave,....very concentrated).Unfortunately it is about 800meters to the peak, ulu's is even further away, and by the time i get there, nackered, an outside set comes through and i'm caught on the inside!!Bit of a wake up call really. Finally i' get to pole position and catch some real gems. The whole area is really a surfing mecca and i'd recommend it to anyone. However, next trip will be to Java for a bit of solitude. Cheers Ludo

Ludo - Any veteran will tell you that no matter how many times a week you pump iron, you can only get paddling fit by paddling. Swiming is probably the closest you're gonna get is you aint in the surf. There are a couple things that may help but fitness is definitely a major prerequisite. You will note that these guys who surf big Maverick style waves all use big long and meaty boards (length and meaty being the key). The longer the board the easier it is to paddle. Bouyincy has a vast impact as well. Going for a mal or not depends on your style of surfing you wish to aspire to. Mals are for mellow 60's style hotdogging while pointers are more suited to hard core styles. If you intend travelling to more exotic destinations, I suggest you order a custom 6'8 maby 7'. Tell the shaper you require a meaty bouyant board say about 3 to 3.5" thick. Then when you surf UK you can hire a mal if the waves demand.

PS. How was Impossibles???

Dear all,

I desperately need some help on board selection and am beginning to get frustrated with the sport. I'm just not enjoying my surfs anymore and yet i'm as keen as ever.

It is probably a common / simple problem and i'm wondering if anyone can give me some advice or has/ is experiencing a similar situation.

I've reached my early thirties, just got married (spent Honeymooooon in Indo and surfed at impossibles et al...), but i seem to be loosing out on my paddling ability. I just can't catch enough waves and when i do i struggle to get in early enough. Fine perhaps in the uk but definately not in Indo.

Shall i go the mini mal way (not necessarily a bad or recessive thing)or is there something else that I could try?

I currently weigh 90kg yet am only 5'8. Yes i'm a little over weight but i just seem to be natuarally heavier and obviously a lot less paddle fit.

I feel strange asking for advice as i consider myself to be a good surfer and should perhaps have the anwers. Yet you wouldn't know it by watching me surf these days.

I'd appreciate any help that anyone can give..Perhaps even suggest a shaper that can tailor make something for me.

The only reason that i wouldn't go the mini-mal way is for travelling reasons...its just too big and heavy at 7'6.However, if its the only sensible way to go then i'd obviously alter my lans.

Many thanks

Ludo

Ps. would any one like to buy a fully flex, 6mth old Large/small Rip Curl Core Wetsuit, 5:4:3? It is literally brand new, predominantly black with dark blue panels, reinforced at the knees and used 3 times, but it is just too hot for me and a little tight and thick on the arms. Price £170 o.n.o.

You can email me on the above or call me on 07974 943603. I'll be in Croyde on the weekend of the 8th and 9th of September if that helps anyone make up their mind on this one.

cheers L

I've done Bali in Indo......absolute perfection most of the year through. Mostly point / hard core reef breaks...definitely not for novices.... Would suggest that only experienced surfers travel there. Only one decent beach break and that's in Kuta. Big stean roller left hand points at Uluwatu, Pdang Padang (means Many Scorpion Fish) and Bingin. At most spots, surfers are extremely welcome and often stay free, provided you buy supplies from the locals (who will try to sell you everything so learn a word which pronounced sounds like "Sing La Piss" - I have no money) You must have boots and a lot of blokes use helmets etc. Waters very clean and locals are very spiritual so dont go hanging your wetsuit on any bush / tree you see coz it could offend (hung my vest on a bush and almost got attacked coz it was a holy tree) Ignore the state of the dogs (these are reincarnated bad people who deserve the bad treatment) and dont buy any food from the vendors pushing carts in the street (I was wondering why none of the cats had tails) Bata for everything. Always take off two thirds of the asking price. Get your arse down there! The waves absolutely cook.

Dear Raymond- just leave your boogie board out in the sun for a while then the wax will soften & easily scrape off with a credit card.Paddling your board should not be a problem if you have some decent fins & your kicking technique is good -try practising at a lane swimming session holding a float in your hands& using only your legs. Also ensure the board is big enough & get some webbed gloves - they increase the power you can generate.

Hello,my name is Raymond and i have recently started boogie boarding again after gap of about 10 yrs. When i used to do it before,i never really took any notice of what i was doing,i used to just get on my board, paddle out and catch a wave back in.Nowadays however,i`m a bit more conscious of what i`m doing and whether i am doing things right.I`m not really that bothered if you know what i mean because i`m still enjoying it,but i`ve noticed that whilst paddling out,i seem to get left behind by guys on malibu boards. At first i thought it was just because i was alittle unfit, but as my fitness improves,my ability to keep up whilst paddling out has not improved much.I always manage to get out,but it just seems to take e bit longer than the malibu boys.Is it just tough shit, thats the dis-advantge of having a boogie or am i doing something wrong??? My other query is this:I brought myself a new board and waxed it up as you do,(i actually forgot the first time i used it and made myself look a right lemon)but i now have too much wax on it and it is becoming slippy itself. How do i get excess wax off a boogie board. Is it safe to use hot water like you do with malibu boards.I know one good way is to leave it in the boot of my car in 25 degree C. but i expect there are easier ways. Sorry to bore you with these trivial questions.I tried reading your information on boogie boarding but it was still under construction.I will thank you now for your advice and i hope you find time to reply. HAPPY SURFING..RAYMOND.

Shark Island (Cronulla Sydney)just finished the annaul SSD Bodyboard comp in 8-10 foot (Hawaiian size) swell with bit too much North swell in it. The result carnage! Broken shoulders torn muscles and major reef cuts. I reckon size for size the island is heavier than Teahupoo what do you guys reckon? S.J's forecast huge groundswell is in fact a storm...groundswell is a swell which has been generated some distance away and travelled into an area largly or completely uninfluenced by the weather system which generated it....when you are within the weather system that is creating the (large)swell you are in a storm situation...good waves can be found in the latter situation if you have local knowledge and enough skill to surf places which are often (but not always) dangerous -over reefs/harbour walls and the like. Sj is an exiteable little fellow and sometimes forgets that although prospects may look favouable for the hardcore experienced surfer, he inadvertantly lures the more inexperienced at the same time-see posting from guy in Nottingham...

Really depends on how you want to end up surfing hon...mini mals influence you to excecute long drawn out manouvers, walking the board, nose rides etc. inevitably 60's style hotdogging.....shorter (or pointed) encourage faster more manouverable styles...like hard cutbacks....re-entries..in other words more the modern shredding. Nothing wrong with either style (I enjoy both) or type of board. As you progress you'll probably want to enjoy both. Also, diferent conditions require diferent boards. You'll find that a mini mal is suited to slower rolling peaks while short boards suit sucky fast bowl sections.

My philosophy is I never ride a board that is longer than I can reach standing with arm touching the nose.

Since you're learning I'd say stick to a mal for the moment. They're much easier to maintain your balance on and once you get enough confidence try the smaller pointies as you put them. At 5'2 I would suggest you go no bigger than a 7'2.

Only thing is dont give up! See ya in the green room

I'm a female 5feet 2inches and don't weigh a lot. I'm learning surfing at the moment but can't find the right board for me. 5 or 6 feet are obviously too small as I'm a beginner. A Minimal 7'2'' is already to big and heavy and I can't even carry it down the beach as it is also to wide. So what am I going to do? I'd like a shape of a Minimal (I definately don't want a pointed nose) but just need something I can handle...So what's your advice?

Not unfounded I lived in N.Devon for 18 years. If you got degrees they are shit ones from Polytechnics like Plymouth in leisure and tourism etc, if not your bludgers taking up the place of someone who would use the qualifications sensibly (and making students pay more tuition fees), there are no decent jobs in N.Devon. All the losers I went to school and to college with are still in sunny Ol' N.Devon and all the clever ones long gone. 'Come back cos our boy friends are here'. Shit! well there's ambition and drive for you! 'Why the interest'? cos Low tide Croyde is the best wave on the North coast. Now fuck off.

As for the tourists, well you boys must be mincers cos all we get in Croyde is groups of couples and single guys????? If we live in such a shithole why all the interest anyway???

hello, ive just been surfing this morning. got fed up of the stupid onshore waves and came out after only an hour and a half cos i just could'nt get out back and so was forced to surf on the messy froth in front of the waves. you see i have a problem, i started in febuary after a weeks surfing the year before when i had a days tuition to show me the ropes, for a while i was loving every second of it but now i,m getting stuck and hav'nt improved for ages and dont know how to. i'm having problems, as far as i can see in that my paddeling is not up to scratch and i cant get fast enough to catch the green waves. is there some sort of special tecnique to it or are there any exercises that i can do that will strenghen up the required muscles other than just doing it a lot? i know you talk about this on the online surf school but i still cant get any where! another thing, WAVE SELECTION, since you are an experienced surfer and know what waves are right, would it be possible to take a picture of the ideal wave at the ideal distance and post it on the website, i supose this is a dificult request as you would need a waterproof digital camera or a normal waterproof camera and a scanner so salnt hold my breath on that one. finally, DUCK DIVING, i hav'nt gota clue how to do it and otherwise it just takes me ages to get outback, by the time i'm allready exhausted and am allmost redy to come back in. i know its quite hard with a mini mal but i dought much could be harder than paddeling pathetically 6 yards and then getting blown back 5 by a useless wave and then spening another 30 seconds getting back to where i was, if you add all that up it gets to more time actually spent geting out to being out there. so i really would like to know ow its done. yours Tom Shelton Ps thanks for provideing my family with such a usefull, freindly and informative pair of resources; my board, wetsuit, gloves, boots, hat,etc all came from your shop and without your surf cam i would'nt have a clue when to go surfing.

Your webcam has inspired me do do the same for my home beach - East Runton, Norfolk. In order to achieve this, funds have to be raised and the only way of doing this is through publicity to our site. Is it possible for you to post a link on your site through onto ours. If so then please email back. It would be much appreciated. If not then we totally understand, that you mat not want any old site advertised on yours, but it would help greatly.

As you say - each to their own. I see what you mean about gripping the rails giving more room to swing through. Odd, but I just find flat on the deck easier, but for no real reason. In fact things seem to have come on in leaps and bounds since then. Mind you that's more likely to be general practice I guess. NB

Different strokes for different folks as they say but for me hands "flat" on the deck gives you less room between your arms to swing your legs under. Not only that but I feel more confident in gripping the rails. I suspect you could compare it a gymnast on a pummel horse....you'll see much more radical moves when they're gripping onto the handles. For me this means having to wax my rails pretty well. But I guess the main advantage is that I have more room and leverage to swing my body quicker. A quick "poppup" is essential in any surf. Give it a try!

Gidday Doc... I'm a girlie who's been surfing a couple of years now. I usually surf a 7ft funboard I got out in New Zealand, which flies, but I find I'm still hampered by my take-off. I don't use my knee (the curse of a lot of girls, I know) but I STILL find it hard to 'pop up' in one movement, which winds me up a great deal. I'm doing all I can do help it - press-ups, dips, practice pops, etc...am I just inherently crap, or am I missing something? Are there any more tips/techniques I could adopt to get there? Any good advice would be cool. Cheers! Izzy

I'm really interested in getting a long board for the summer and this water cooled one looks nice. Please let me know a price if possible. Cheers Rob

Dear Steve, Just to let you know the board I bought at 7.30 pm on Saturday night May 19th, a Tiki minimal 7` 6, is fab, so it wasn`t a waste of time you hangin around and so nice to buy it in a relaxed hassle free environment. Although the surf was pretty poor, but the sun shone that week, I managed to get a couple of days and up first time! The north sea has had its fare share as well. Keep up the good work, you come highly recommended. See you again in August if you are around. Thanks for the sound advice.

Why do ppl flock to Croyde when they can barely turn and dunk their boards? Seriously they'd have heaps more fun a Saunton or Woolacombe and maybe snag a couple of good 'uns which they will never do a Croyde esp' a low tide. When there have the basics dialled then they'd have more more fun and cause less hassle. I suppose its Croyde's rep' as one of the best breaks around and ppl wanting to run before they can walk syndrome. Plus hire shops cashing in...etc

Recently I’ve noticed that the number of English surfers on the road (particularly in Asia and Australia) has increased dramatically. Twenty years ago there were so few of you and it was always a pleasure to run into someone from Croyde or Newquay or Devon or wherever. Not always so anymore.

At the risk of making a hideously broad generalisation, English surfers seem to be up on one knee singin football songs at every break from Hikkadua to Byron Bay these days. I guess that’s OK for them but it tends to reflect badly on their countrymen who often surf very well, keep their cockney voices down, their football scores to themselves, respect the locals and avoid dropping in when ever possible. Always a pleasure to share a south swell with the guys who know the score but the others seem so arrogant with their half baked surf school competencies and pop out mini mals. Its a real trial having them in the water particularly as they often not only drop in but fall off as soon as the wave sections up leaving anyone behind less than happy.

There is real resentment building over the way a vocal minority of English surfers treat parts of the surfing map as some sort of Disneyland full of 2 dimensional locals provided for their amusement and indulgence. It’s a bad look and there are going to be tears if they don’t pull up.

Thought for today - Clubbing and surfing are different, you may be on holiday, but why not sober up, put away your Charlie and concentrate on cruising rather than losing.

Keep your knees bent and your hair wet.

Make your own wax!!!!!!!It's easy, take 3 cups of sunflower oil and add to the melted liquid of 8 normal size candles. Stir until well mixed, now take a golf ball sized lump of Blu Tak and break into smaller bits adding to the mixture. Finally add 10 hubba bubba bubble gum sweets plus 6 sticks of normal chewing gum (Spearmint only),3 teaspoons of honey, 1/2 tube of pritt sick,5 teaspoons of cow gum, 1/2 tube of copydex,6 table spoons of black strap molasses and hey presto Dr goofys home made surf wax (guaranteed to the edge of the water sir). Remember don't try this @ home unless supervised by an adult.Take it eaaaaasy! GF

I think this is a cool site. For the past 5 years I've been heavily involved in website design for big fat corporates all over the world and one thing that really bugs me is the fact that some people get so hung up over visuals and slickness. Of course corporates like that stuff the same way that they would love to charge for all access, censor and restrict choice. I love sites that are 'retro' i.e. those that stick to the orginal spirit of the web and don't cost $250,000 to design and another $250,000 to build. Keep sites loose, chilled and local - that's what I say. Ironically, last year I worked in Japan on a site that was deliberately de-slicked in order to connect with the youth market and the i-mode mobile community.

Keep the faith

Last/Time/On/This/Site and other complainants,

What's it like to be the surfing equivalent of Mary Whitehouse? She spent years complaining about what was on TV, without ever considering that if she didn't like it, she could just turn off! How about removing the LPS site from your bookmarks and taking your foul language elsewhere?

As 'Stoked' points out, this site is more than just an indication of what the surf is like, it does provide a diversion for those of us who live miles away and would rather not. If you want a forecast, then either learn to read a weather map or use the forecasting sites.

Keep it up Steve and have a good vacation.

From Steve...for your info...the time at which the pictures are taken is above each picture. The time at which the site is updated and uploaded is at the bottom of the outlook section..under usual circumstances the difference is maybe about half an hour...It takes nearly an hour a day (7days a week/365days a year) minimum to run the site (without updating anything else such as the accommodation guide or YSHBHY etc.) There may be shortcomings but I feel only a fool would criticise a free service like this...as if he would manage to maintain this for over 2 years??? It's a free world so lets see what Mr. www.Icandobetter.com can manage...As for the second or third daily update...this has been considered many times and is under consideration again at the moment but I cant see how I can possibly do all the extra work required and run a business. I have however successfully run my own business since 1975 (26 years) The surf-cam thing has only been running for 2 years, I had a business before it and i'll have a business after it so just say the word and i'll pull the plug....what I couldn't do with those extra 7 hours a week....ps I'm off to France for a week, I have done my best with Brendon to keep the daily pics running...Decision on future of croyde-surf-cam when I return. STEVE

Just logged on & sorry to hear about Steve's accident - hope you're better soon Steve. The appalling, inarticulate foul mouthed emails that have just appeared are pathetic. They have no place on any web site let alone one for surfers of all ages who appreciate the opportunity to exchange information with those who share their passion. The LPS is an excellent resource both on the web & at the shop The surf update & cam is appreciated -not only does it help in planning a trip to the coast but it also provides solace & pleasure to see the waves in a favourite part of the world when work, time, family commitments or simply distance prevents one from being there. Constructive criticism is useful but abuse is unhelpful & unwarranted & best left in the infant & junior playground. "It is a beautiful world.Try to be happy"

I personally think croyde surf cam is wank. Steve up dates about 10.00 with pics taken at 8.00. As we all know surf changes so rapidly 2hrs delay is shite. Why not up date at morning lunch time and just before you shut up shop. Not as if you have anything else better to do you run a hire shop for f**ks sake. Might have been 4ft and clean this morning but at lowtide it was 2-3ft windblown cack.Pissing Lamb cam... freak. All you arse kissers can defend Steve.

New to this site but love it. Few days back Mike wrote this:- Date: 18 Apr 2001 Sue, since you refuse to answer my calls and since I know you surf this site I thought this the best way to speak to you. Sue, we've been through some hard times lately. And I know you often feel second to my surfing. As you suggested, I've taken time to consider the last 5 years we've been together. They have been great. I've now come to the moral and responsable decision I should have made a while ago. You've always said I'm scared of comitment. Well Sue I'm ready to comit! So my hon I think I think it's best if we go our own way. You will always come second to my surfing and I've decided to comit myself to my new love. She's 6'4 by 18 by 2.25 and she flys through sucky bowl sections like nothing else.

See ya!

Mike have you thought of a career in Comedy script writing? Only laff cos' there was somewhat of a 'personal resonance' except it took me 15 years to fall in love and then cut loose with all 9ft of my Steve James Special Brew! Ahhh Lerv at first sight. If you spot any one doing the 'Bananna Skin'off the back of a long board this weekend it's bound to be me.

Bodyboarders get heaps deeper barrels than stand ups. Couple of years back there was a comp' at cloud break, the winner was supposed to have a heat against Mike Stewart 'cept the organisers backed out as no one could come close to stewarts tube riding. Shark Island, Teahupoo pipe, G-land, bb'ing is the sickest way to utilise these waves. Kelly Slaters roll to spin invented by Eppo a bb'er 1993, throwing the tail influenced by Paul Roach a drop kneer..What to you have to say about that, eh? Bring it on.

A bit dubious myself mate. But saying that , I started surfing in 78 and the most rad boards were "short" single fins (mine was a 6'6 swallow) and when twins came out a couple years later we all had to have one. So I suppose it could depend on age etc. I reckon when it comes to the extreme adrenalin rush these youngsters should goforit! The program on channel 4 the other night??...some bloke reckons Laird Hamilton will be riding upsidedown in the barrel one of these days Shit! That would be something to see!

Sorry...the letter I refered to below was actually in the latest Surfer. You folks gotta have a peek at this issue. Some serious XXL waves these blokes are pulling into. You know...watching the progress of surfing with regards to tow in, hydro fins etc, one has to ask what's next??? I mean we have blokes riding waves you used to only imagine in comic strips and board design is moving in directions unimaginable. How more radical do we go?? I remember a few years ago some mate back home talking about puting two small gas canisters into the foam with a a release pad on the tail. We all laughed at him then but now I'm not so sure. What you folks reckon??

you must know that the surf changes constantly- the camera does not unfortunalty mark the photo itself with the date/time etc so we do it ourselves...we do not lie- it would destroy the credibility of the whole thing...if we dont have the picture it says "no pic today" or similar. I can understand the suspicion you have however as nearly every other site i have ever looked at has either at some time lied or not been updated, this is VERY OFTEN due to the fact that the date automatically changed by a web-bot ahead of an updated picture so you get todays date but yesterdays picture. We dont use a date web-bot for this very reason...

Dear Jon aka Barnacle Bill You are not alone in wondering whether it is possible to duck dive a mini-mal - my board is 7 ft 11" - & I don't know the answer. One reply suggested turning turtle - it can help but you often still get hammered. I have been recommended to 'slice & duck' - you turn the board on its rail & push it under with your arm & leg, then flatten it out with you on top, submarining under the oncoming white water. Hmm - I've tried that too with little success - my board seems to 'floaty' to push it under that way. I'd appreciate comments - could a short boarder give a description of their technique & whether they have succeeded in applying it to a mini-mal or longer . Apparently some Aussie longboarder used to stand on the tail of his board , raising the thing up vertically & then sinking with it under the wave & re-emerging the other side smiling .

Hippy Soul Surfer. If every time you go down you come up with a mouth full of sea water just don't go down. As my Grandad once said 'son if it aint cooked don't eat it'.It strikes me your girl friend has misinterpreted the slogan 'go hard get wet', ditch her for the younger model. Oh yeah! Although it might taste salty it's probably not sea water (if you catch my drift...). Finally make sure the younger model is not into the same water sports her sister is into!

In fact she hit me over the head with a picture frame and now I've got 12 stitches and no girlfriend! So you see my problems got worse coz my GP reckons I cant go in the water for 2 weeks.

Dear Doc Surf Ethic

I call you "Doc" coz you obviously must be highly qualified at giving such educated advice as below. I was wondering if you could help me with a small problem I've been experiencing lately (well for the last 4 years)

Everytime I push under I come out spluttering , coughing and a mouth full of ucky sea water. Then later I always seem to have the runs and have developed piles for the last four years. (also a rash)

Further to this, my girlfriend's sister came onto me and I noticed a feeling in my combats that I haven't fealt in a while (4 years) I've told her I'm not interested even though she's 18, very fit and has an obviously vigorous sex drive.

Please help...I'm desperate!!!

To Barnacle bill !

I think that you should stay well away from the water . You are a liability throwing your board away like that ! I hope that you surf on your own and away from the hot dogs and young groms who could not only pick up your bad habits but more seriously get injured !

My message to you is.....STAY DRY AND OUT OF THE WATER !

I have a severe problem regarding my ability to duck dive . I tend to panic when I see a wave over 1 - 2 foot and think only of my personal survival ! I have developed the nasty habit of throwing away my board with gay abandon - not caring for those other occupants of our oceans and any injury that they might suffer. My problem involves my board and my lack of technique in pushing the naughty nose under the water. It is a mini - mal . Any helpful suggestions as to how I can improve my technique ? If you can help then I will bore you with my bigger problems later.

Thanks and keep trying to get your balance....I did once!

Stop being so confrontational and if lifes so bad.....move out of Brighton!! Oh and one point on the F & M. Mr Angry is right to be p@#$ed off!! The golf course is open because they can manage it. They are not irresponsible dog walkers or ignorant surfers. We are surfers and use the pathways to the beach (and to the point it seems), lets not pass the buck and try to do as best we can!! Hey Mr Angry what about all the dogwalkers continuing to use the footpaths, lets not lose site of the fact that this is the main reason places were closed not because of the minimal risk posed by surfers and look at the still open Saunton golf course that sends a really clear message to all the surfers driving past it.I am not condoning the actions of a couple of irresponsible idiots but dont tar all visiting surfers with the same brush

This may be a bias view but dont you think self promotion should be kept on those trashy websites that contain nothing but a load of links to other websites (i.e. A1surf.com). SJ could learn a thing or two from Steve at LPS who, despite liking PINK and horrendous "elevator" music has produced a concise and informative website for visitors, and an intelligent forum for residents. Has anyone actually looked at www.newquayreef.com, is this a serious proposition? Where are the specifications, the technical details, the discussions. Seems like theyve had about 20 notes posted since 1998?????

If you guys all find it absolutely necessary to surf the point, a dismal and depressing wave at the best of times, why not walk the road instead of the footpath?? Even if you guys are friends and neighbours please have some thought and consideration for the local area, businesses and the rest of the people who actually wanna continue surfing Croyde!! . Just come back from Braunton and what do I see, another of surfers walking along the costal path, a big loser with a 8.9 YELLOW GUN, nice board. he has just paddled out. I would though like to no how it is that the locals in this area seem to have no say in what surfers who come to this area do. . Is it not about time that the local surf crew who may no who these losers are take matters into their own hands. , well just seeing him throw his BIG GUN AWAY on two ft slop, he may after all not be a local, and now he looks like he is paddling out to Lundy. Would it not be a good Idea if a group of locals take some action against these idiots by taking there boards off them for good, like a surf swat team.. If I was a farmer or a businessman whose livelyhood could be ruined if F & M takes off I can assure you I would be doing something, as it only takes one idoit to walk through the wrong place and you may not have foot and mouth five miles away, it will be on your door. Just had another look out and cannot see him, with luck he has drowned. and I just get pissed off seeing these idiots thinking of we all the time, the reason I started surfing was because I was under the impression thirty years ago that surfers where a group of people who had respect for the land and sea. In regard to Saunton opening, if the surfers take the same attitude there as around this side of the point it will be closed again before you can blink.

Hello Steve,

My name is Steve Lewis i am originally from Cheltenham,Glos but now live in Kiama,NSW,Australia.(an hour south of Sydney)

I use your site regularly to check the surf at Croyde where i surfed for many years. Also when my mates are going surfing there, as they always lie to me about how good it was and i 'should have been there'!

It is a great site and the photos good quality so keep it up!

I am coming over to the Uk at Easter and hope to get a few surfs in,but i no longer own any winter gear,i believe you hire this! Your chart says it is 9deg at the moment and i am surfing in 23deg here so i think i have gone a bit soft and will probably die!! Could you let me know how much it is to hire the works and wether i can book it up ahead.

many thanks

Hi Steve

Right, I have just checked your site for surf conditions, scrolled down to the bottom and noticed that you are pee'd off with people nicking content.

I am guilty. I have been theifing pics from your site to use on my site. They are too good. I have used them to show how good it has been this winter. I have also included a link to your site and have clearly stated that they are your pics. It is not for commercial use or for a business of any sort. It is just the site for club members and a bit of general fun.

However, it is your material, so if it is a problem I will cease immediately.

Hi Steve.

Thanks again for the excellent coverage of the current Foot & Mouth situation in North Devon.

You're idea about baggy car park etc is great and I would have also thought they'd have done this, though if the car parks remain closed then I have no problem as in the end it's helping to control the situation and hopefully make a "return to normal" sooner rather than later.

The site(s) that are mimiking CB Surf Cam are crap anyway and I'd hazard a guess the people who use your site religiousy would also agree.

Thanks again and hopefully see you around Croyde soon.

Cheers

Scott

I am one of those windboys who depend on saunton and I am very impressed with your new campaign to regain water access without jeopardizing the safety of local livestock. Your case looks strong and would help many other local businesses that rely on the natural assets of the area for trade. In your next installment could you post emails for bombarding ~NDDC, NT and Chrusties?

keep up the great work.

Well we live here and are not just nomads chasing dollar signs London Boy. This is a discussion board and the last weeks topics happen to be relevant and (apparently) stimulating. If you took a step outside the concrete jungle youd realise there is an epidemic the likes of which hasnt been seen since the '60's and looks set to surpass even that!! This is a problem with many ramifications, and not just the livings of the nations farmers and the food stocks in your local Tescos. In an area such as Croyde (and the rest of the SW) coastal communities rely on The Beach as the focal point for an essential industry. When the beaches close, as has recently been the case, YOU cannot surf, kids cannot dig whacking great holes in the beach, and tourists like YOU go and play golf or go to B&Q instead. Now even if you work in telesales you can probably derive the consequences. And as for the local / visitor, respect / ignorance, attitude / passion debate, then you just obviously havent been paying attention!! The discussion would appear to be the issue of everyone having more fun..........worth talking about isnt it????

I'm just browsing and though I don't live in Croyde it must be a great place to be. Here's this web page playin "Je t'aime" and lots of blokes giving everybody a hard time because they don't live there but like to surf there from time to time. And then getting all worked up about somebody walking across a field. mmmm... what are you all drinking down the pub? The best surfer in the water is the one having the most fun - lets face it, its a damm silly way to spend our time - so why be so up tight? try and see the fun(ny) side of it all.

If there were signs up I think those 2 blokes should be shot otherwise they were just walking around the edge of the field not through it. I think people should stop being so neurotic if your going to get it you will, its wind borne. Birds are more prone to carrying the disease than people how do you stop them? Focus your anger toward the government, pretty soon were going to have no national herd left and have to import inferior European meat. As far as The Blair brigade saying 'the country side is not closed BULLSHIT I live in Somerset (1 case) and you can't step off a bloody road. Its in Ashford its only a matter of time...thats because the whole thing has been mismanaged not 'cos of a couple of wankers walking around a field. Then they will close the beach.

Does anyone fancy helping me sort a leaflet to be distributed with hire boards that informs those who need to know about the required etiquette and rules of respect? It'd be very simple to do and could be done on an A5 photocopied flier and maybe blown up to A3 as a poster if necessary. I can write, but my drawing is dreadful. Any decent artists/cartoonists out there?

Great to see some common sense and literacy creeping into the discussion!! Nice one NickB. Think you've just corked the bottle and stemmed the flow of nonsense and abuse!!?? Its great to hear that someone has visited Croyde and actually enjoyed their trip! Maybe you arrived without any pre-conceptions? Your helpful comments and common-sense approach will hopefully propagate a little this summer. And yes your absolutely right about Saunton and especially Woolacombe. Both far superior waves for anyone up to intermediates, where there generally isnt the slightest whiff of a crowd and wave duration invariably outdoes that of Croyde!! Right again on the "does size matter" debate. Yep everyone started on old planks, some of us still choose to surf 'em when the waves arent up to scratch or the crowd gets out of control!! The problem starts when novice/intermediates take uncontrolable boards out at Croyde when its big / heavy or both!! Personally if the surfs OK and Im on a longboard id much rather be at Woolacombe or Saunton, purely for the length of ride and space in the water!! Sorry Steve, RC and Tim but Croydes hire shops are a major contribution to this problem, though obviously not the sole cause. Be nice to see NickB's suggestions put in to practice. So Nick keep on enjoying, spread the word that Croyde isnt the localised hell-hole some would have us believe and good luck!! PS who gave me this silly name?????????????

Having read all your views on the great but long and tiresome respect/surfrage debate.I have come to a conclusion, hopefully withy many other followers. There are obviously 2 types of surfer and I dont mean female and male my friends. There are the soulful more relaxed surfer who is generally well travelled and more wise .Hence then they will not commit the horrendous act of surf rage in any form.Or there is the aggresive water dweller who does any thing for a bit of reaction to give himself something to play with.We all know the type, the ones who should take a surf trip, find some friendly people and a bit of soul.

All but TSS and Mr 27 local in particular, As a novice/improving surfer, it's nice to see that there are people out there who have a relaxed attitude to those of us who live elsewhere in the UK and are forced to travel to North Devon to do what we love, but have only relatively recently discovered.

I agree that respect for both the local people who have surfed - and just lived! - in Croyde or any other break is absolutely vital. I would also say that in maybe 15 visits to the area, no one has ever been anything other than helpful and friendly both in and out of the water. I am sure that this takes some effort when novices (often accidentally and without any malice) and total beginners (with no etiquette knowledge) are dropping in all over the place. Having taken the standard BSA intro course, I was told who takes priority on a wave and have endeavoured to be sure not to break the unwritten code.

Maybe it's a radical idea, but perhaps if some of the clearly experienced surfers who tantrum on these pages passed on a bit of friendly advice, the novices/improvers who want to get good, would heed their words and instances of dropping in would decline. We don't want to annoy anyone you know.

Those down for a beach holiday are a different matter, but may I suggest that perhaps a leaflet handed out with hire boards might give them some useful information on dropping in, letting go of, leaping off the board etc. If it was couched in terms of safety then maybe people would take notice. It is a source of wonder to me that no one gets seriously hurt over an August Bank Holiday. Mind you, if parents continue to deliberately go against the life guard instructions to stay out of the surfing area with their toddlers, it's only a matter of time.

On the Saunton/Croyde argument, again, might it not be a good for the hire shops (as Steve at the LPS does on this site) to suggest that beginners use Saunton or Woolacombe. I know that Saunton is not an option at the moment, but it is both easier and longer (both in terms of beach and ride) and therefore much more suited. And I know that Woolacombe is a bit far off but similar applies. Surely most serious beginners would appreciate the advice that the longer you spend upright on a wave the better you're likely to get.

Long boards vs short boards? Who really cares? Surely those now using short boards learned on something longer. Watching 50 (and older) longboaders at the weekend showed me that style and grace can be every bit as fascinating as the more radical short board stuff.

Finally (and sorry this has been so long), Croyde is a great place and somewhere I hope to keep visiting and enjoying for many years. I love surfing and I want to get as good as I can. I hope that as I progress I will be able to maintain a calmness and tolerance of others in the water and will pass on what I know to others who may want to take up the most amazing sport in the world.

Any thoughts?

Nick

To Mr 27 Local I lift my hat in respect. You obviously have more sense than I gave you credit for and gladly eat that humble pie. Perhaps my experiences in the UK have been with the likes of this KC creaton. So a truce my felow "wave-ologist". From my side, I can assure you the respect due to you and your culture. Let this be a leason to you kids out there. Aggression in the water should be restricted to the face of the wave. Anything else could result in serious injury if not death. The ocean is a playground that demands respect and discipline. Respect for Our Mother Ocean and each other, regardless of what equipment you use. And just as important, discipline, to follow the unwritten rules.

See ya in the green room

Mr 27 is elequent and exactly right. Anywhere you surf there is a pecking order and respect is due to the guys further up it than you. The hoards of non-local people dont seem to know this, they dont seem to know what dropping in is, the shops that sell the boards should give them "the surfing highway code" with their large learner surfboard, they should tell them that a real surfboard has a point on it, but they get to have a trainer one so its easier for them. This "arnt we all having a jolly time together attitude" is why 4 guys on logs will drop in on you at once and not even think its wrong, its ignorance in place of respect and then they wonder why they get attitude. Bye the way, There was a serious case of surf-rage 2 years ago, not at croyde but at Saunton just to prove that this is a universal problem and not just a croyde thing.

Hmm, think someones gonna have a coronary before too long! KC why not chill out, learn to express yourself and do Steve (LPS) a favour and skip the language!! Totally agree with the sentiments of our Ozzie friend, (who manages to express himself without a single expletive). But all the rage simmering here seems to be blinding some of you to the reality. My previous was meant to explain that there is no resentment, that the local guys do not charge down the beach ready to pick fights and drag it to the beach or into the pubs. It is generally (!!!!) seen as a lack of understanding and "respect" by visitors that causes tempers to flair in the sea. Anyone who has a little experience of travel in the UK or overseas knows that lack of respect for locals invariably gets you noticed and results in less waves for the duration of your stay! Unfortuneately Croyde doesnt seem to get this recognition and the hoardes paddle out blind and either flounder or take up battle! I only ever recall local tempers flaring when people repeatedly try to drop in, do drop in or are basically so out of control that there told in no uncertain terms to bugger off back to Saunton........where believe it or not the majority of us learnt the basics ourselves!!! No shame in that is there?? And to answer a question I believe this isnt the view of the minority. Im attempting to put into words a commonly held view whcih is mispercieved as arrogance and aggression. As you said local population isnt big so we're pretty cloesly knit. By the way KC never said my relatives were buried in Croyde. That was someone else with a blunter point to make!! Oh and KC if I knew you and your attitude I dont think Id be talking to in the pub!!

Point taken Mr 27 Local, and having surfed (non stop) for 24 years (I'm 35 now) I will be the first one to agree that visitors must, without a doubt, respect the passion the locals have developed over their home grounds. Coming from a land of plenty (surf and sun) I would imagine this passion to be that much stronger in the UK. It is a natural instinct to protect those resources that are rare. (I'd be a blatant liar if I said this was never practiced back home) One fact must never be forgotten. Given that there is not much else Croyde has to offer, I'd hazard a guess that 60 to 70 % of the business in Croyde is dedicated (if not reliant) mainly to the tourist industry. So you sit with the dilemma of not much surf versus not much money. The only solution is MUTUAL RESPECT. "Mutual" being the key word. Now I'm not saying anything like you owe it to tourists, but merely that this fact should be considered. Having travelled to a number of places in the world, I must say that I have never experienced the levels of agro I've seen here. I understand why, but it's just such a shame that while your hot locals try so hard to be recognised as part of the international comraderie, a small minority projects a welcome that is colder than the water. waters

Well I guess thats what happens when you try to act the pacifist. You get monikered and become the focus of aggression. Alright, lets try to explain one more time!! The local guys; from our youngest grommets to the respected older generation such as Ralphie, Jewels, Dicky Carter and the like have put in the time at Croyde. We know the wave and are out there to get 'em. Now this isnt attitude, its passion. Were in the water minding our own business and focused, trying to find waves to fulfill that passion. Croyde is competitive whether you guys and girls like it or not!! Weve grown up with that hence weve learned to fight for our waves, whether its just the boys in the water or every man and his dog. So dont take it personally and start making lame comparisons to Surf City!! The guys down there are all friends of ours too. Total bunch of nutcases who happen to rip, and give more attitude than you'll ever get at Croyde, a fact thats reflected by the amount of pubs they regularly get banned from?!?!?!? Anyway Croyde is compact, no changing that. However it is friendly, and the local guys and girls of all ages, particular of my age group are like family. Come to Croyde enjoy it but dont try to change it.......it just aint gonna happen!! At the end of the day were as amped to get waves as anyone else, except we know how to fight harder and make the most of a few hours in the water............sorry but you cant expect us to apologise for that can you??

Whats wrong with XR3i's Mr 27 local? I grew up in the area and I find the majority of drop-ins are by the good young local surfers of your age bracket not the try hards as they disappear when it gets really good. Newquay is totally different, get a good wave and a local will smile at Croyde they scowl perhaps it hurts their over inflated egos? If the better surfers set a good example we might not have this dreadful vibe in the water. Surfing was so much more fun before.

Who are all these highly self opinionated freaks and where are they crawling from. My guess is if you havent the balls to sign your name; KC, Lt, johnboy....and all other annonymous contributers, you havent the balls to stand up for your dubious opinions. One thing to remember KC, if all the longboarders and lesser experienced surfers (such as yourself I hazard to guess) surferd at Croyde youd probably get less waves than you do right now!!!! Mind you I guess the longer you spend verbal masturbating on this site, the less time you spend in the sea getting in OUR way. And by US I mean all the guys who have grown up together at Croyde, and surf here (and anywhere) with a passion, rather than an attitude. Take it from me (and Im only 27) it was all so much more fun before you guys all sold your xR3i's and bought boards!!!

1.)You complete and utter cock! The original comment was about LONGBOARDS. A short board with more length is still a short board not a Longboard. A really long short board would be classified a 'gun' or a 'rhino chaser'but never a longboard (I am not suggesting any one would use a gun here..). Don't discuss ignorance with me you dsylexic half wit. A mal is a mal, a short board is a shortboard and a long board is a long board. I bet you have a quiver of boards for riding the extreme conditions you experience at Croyde! What do you do when the surf gets too small?...ride a bodyboard! If the original comment was in regard to adding length on to your stick for bigger waves then somebody should look up their terminology shouldn't they? 2.)Stick at Saunton? why would I want to stick a Saunton if the comment was made by a blantant short boarder???? You really are remarkably stupid!

KC The only reson why you ride a long board at Croyde is because your a gutless little fag and you like riding on the shoulder not the in bowl/barrel. Take off about two years before the lip pitches then gun for the shoulder. Even bodyboarders are more graceful than you boat riding lady boys. If the organisers had not been so irresponsible considering the spread of foot and mouth (yeah lets hold a competition in Cornwall one of the only places not to have been totally shafted by the outbreak and get surfers from all across the Country...Wankers)they might have got contestable waves(it will probably hit us all in the arse as when its starts cranking access to the waves will probably be restricted like at Saunton).

hahahahahaha..Lucy u make me laugh nice explanation of the peeling feet drama...but u could always put it down to what i said..(look further down the page) or: depending where u surf or have done a fungal infection can occur on the top layer of the skin causing it to peel..and im no doctor but it is true..been there done that.on that note id like to say that a so called proprietor of a certain ruda holiday camp no names (yatey) didn't keep trying to f*** croyde up then certain skin problems may not occur so often..had to add that..andy knows what i mean

cheers

nicholas, About the feet...theoretically it's quite likely that you'll get a bit of peeling when you've been in cold water for a long time. when your feet are very cold, the blood vesels constrict (let less blood through), so that more blood goes to your more vital organs, like your heart or liver. This means that the oxygen and nutrients that the skin in your feet need, won't be getting to them. the cells will then die, and your skin will peel off. The top layer is always dead anyway, so you're probably just helping the skin to regenerate itself and getting rid of the old dead stuff. It shouldn't be a problem unless they start getting really red and raw...then you should see a doctor. There's your biology lesson for today! ah well, haven't got much else to do today, like you lucky buggers that don't have to go 2 uni in the middle of the country, and get to go surfing whenever you want! Please tell me why the localism and general bad vibe at Croyde is being excerbated over recent years. I moved away and recently came back for a surf and the vibe was awful. The selfishness and egotistical nature of some of the younger (20's)local surfers was very sad and quite disturbing.

To the little Pink surf shop, before christmas I sent you an E-mail, To let you know about the surf on the costa Blanca in the winter in Spain on the east side, over christmas we have had two weeks of constant surf from 1 metre - 2.5- 3 metre days, and on average we have 2-3 days of surf around 1-1.5 metre days aweek. The good thing about here is that the coast line has many different bays, so you need to now local knoledge on the water's. there are many reef's along the coast which when they work. the cystal clear warm water's are nice in may when you just need a pare of boardies. The good thing here is there are no crowd's from september to july. plus you need to be here for around two weeks to have a good chance of some good quality waves but if you don't know the area you have about 30% chance of finding the best spots. My friend found out when he came out to test the water's for waves for a magazine over the christmas spell. I have surfed here for 5 year's now alone with friends, if you use the navy's forcast at www.fnoc.navy.mil/public you will see the forcast of the world and is very good. Love your site, visit it nearly 3 times a week and surfed croyde many time in the past. take care, Adrian Howe

The surf is bad at croyde, its much better on the south coast. The water is far too polluted, and there are massive sharks hear. The village is not quaint, but ruined buy too many campsites. The people of the village are not cool, or pretending to be cool, they are all internet freaks, that cannot be bothered to check the surf themselves. The pubs are crap, who wants to go to a pub that you hit your head on beams anyway! The people that go there are after a quiet pint, not an up beat cool lager, otherwise found in social centres like trendy cafes in london. It's unsurprising you have had a slow response. I have a number of shots of various locations between Croyde & Minehead collected with a Digital cam, but I would need significant motivation to get off my arse, copy them onto floppies and then find a stamp and envelope.

If you had an e-mail address, then I would be able to forward stuff to you during a coffe break.

Still, your web page is good, and is one of the few that I check daily for the high quality surf check. It would be really great if you could maybe do a midday update as well! See you out the back.

I'm an intermediate surfer and surf regular but I can't seem to generate the same speed down the line on my forehand that I can do surfing backhand. I always seem to lose speed on my bottom turn and end up having a really short ride whereas going on my backhand I seem to be heading straight down the line before I know it.

Hi Guys, great page , always really handy to see if there are some waves out there before travelling down from London area [we usually come down every week] Thanks for the page! To the person who asked about surfing in the Dominican Republic, I've been there a couple of times, and there ain't a lot going round Playa Dorada, mostly it's reef breaks, and not much of a wave when I was there, but there is a place a bit further down the coast that apparently is quite good, but...can't remember the name!

Well boys and girls, looks like we've got a bit of a debate opening up here?... JJ has some valid points but then hey! i would say that. with regards to the irate guy earlier, hey, dont let it get to ya. either you surf or you dont. this is an international thing, not just directed at you. if people want to jump on the bandwagon to impress their mates, its up to them. my point (TO EVERYONE INCLUDING MR.IRATE) is that simply donning the lastest surfwear DOESNT make you a surfer, ok. your views people? AND IF YOU'RE GONNA CRITICISE OUR SITE, please be more specific and constructive. if you have a problem you'd like to see rectified, please dont just slag us off. cheers. GK

We have decided to completely delete our site....only joking. We have chosen to completely ignore people of your sort, because there is no point in wasting quality time on you. We have only been online for a few months as an organisation so we admit that perhaps we are not as yet a completely professional service. As for surfers being real or not, it really isn't my place to say. Just that if you surf you are if you don't you are not. Hi Steve

I'd like to create a page in my online gallery showing pics of the surf on Friday 29 Sept - typical format would be one to three images from each source with full copyright credits and web and e-mail links prominently displayed. I've contacted Britsurf's SJ too and I'm hoping to get a few more images as soon as folks get them back from Boots or wherever.

I was wondering if I could have your permission to reproduce a selection of those epic shots you took - they were seriously impressive. I'm going to mail Alf Alderson at Surf Mag and point him in yours and SJ's direction regarding your pics anyway, whatever your decision may be.

As for displaying them to the strains of Black Magic Woman - excellent! I'll be down your way in my bus between Oct 21 - 28 so I'll try and drop by the shop.

All the best

Just want to say what a great site!! I've been coming to Croyde for 15 years on and off (mostly off) and have never come across your site, in spite of searching for a Web cam etc. or info on Croyde.

It is positioned really well, giving great advice and information for "out-of-Croyders" and yet not being too sanctimonious about letting locals have their share.

I'll be sending all my surf wannabee friends to your place from now on for kit.

Have a big one!!

PS Having just bought a Peter Lawson mini-mal, I'm hoping to come down during the winter and get some surf. Any tips, hints, help??

This lunchtime I picked up a Minus Eight and I can tell you that it has already paid for itself. The seals on that thing are so good that it took the cleanup set of the day to push any water under the collar. After about half an hour in the water I realised I was sweating! You could paddle out between icebergs and not feel cold. I've had spring suits which were harder to paddle in and even though it fits so closely it didn't rash or pinch at all. It turns winter into summer! Well worth the extra dosh. Thanks for the tip,

Steve hello Finally getting keypad to paper- was in your shop last week and glad to finally meet you. I am the guy with the 2 impatient kids that wanted to trade in a 6foot7 board for something longer...well maybe I should hold onto it for those hollower low tide sessions and just buy something longer- So I would appreciate it a huge amount if you could keep an eye out for me- I am looking for something with a shortboard shape, but 7 foot plus- just need a bit of length and bouyancy to keep me going on the slacker days but need to be able to duckdive it - forgive the stupid question (I have never ridden a longboard) how do people cope with them in the impact zone - how do you get under waves?)

Forgive the stupid question- I am sure you get you share of those- anyway- keep an eye out for the board- anything around 300 squid should be fine

Second thing is (this is for real) I am seeking a camper van also!! So if you hear of anything please let me know - I missed the last one that you had advertised by a few days! I am after anthing reliable, decent sized motor, and not rusted away...

Surf looking not to bad at all today and I wish I was there. Sorry we did not make it back to the shop the next day to get the keyrings, but the kids were full of it after breaking camp earlier in the morning and I had to get going...Do you sell any of that stuff online? Hope you are well and thanks for your time in the shop you guys were just great- will see you next time I am there... best regards

"Just Happened by" There's no shortage of places to surf round the UK (mind you an artficial reef at bournemouth is not a bad idea but that's another story) its just that people are gregarious and tend to follow the fashion. I agree there are probably a lot of people at Croyde that would do a lot better elsewhere. Please note if you are a beginner Saunton is a much better spot and there is more than enough room for everyone. I know some of the top surfers who prefer it because if they just walk a mile down the beach they can always have the whole break to themselves on the busiest day of the year! The same is true for woolacombe and/or Puts

just happned across your site and it seems that there is a bad vibe going on at Croyde - too many people chasing too few waves. The solution maybe to build artificial reefs like the one proposed at bournemouth. I can't see surfing growing at its current rate without this kind of increase in surfable spots.

So many people looking for tips to make it "out back" when Croyde is at a decent size. You should realize, if your not able your not capable and are only endangering yourself and the guys who have put in the time and earned the right to be out there. Surely it does not take a gifted mind to see that YOU less experienced guys, and yes that includes the mals, waveskis and the MAJORITY of spongers would have more fun, get more waves and progress faster surfing a smaller, more manageable wave. Lets face it, just about anywhere in the UK is more manageable than Croyde on its day. As for the question in why WE get angry doing something we love......well think Ive answered that already, havent I?? Ive surfed here since the age of 9......18 years.....and lets all agree on one thing; weve all got a responsibility to clean up Croyde, not just Yatesy!! Great pictures of Friday.....I missed it by a few thousand miles!! One more thing .... Croyde is not the place for surf schools and hired equipment......stop this madness now!!

Ross: yes you can shape boards out of polysyrene foam but it is weaker and more difficult to handle than the official foam and may need some sort of strengthening stringer to reinforce it. Makes for light boards though.

Hi y'all just thought I'd make my mark. great surfcam and don't object to the music. On the subject of getting out the back in heavy conditions the important thing is to get some sort of duck dive to get under the waves rather than through or over them. but don't get too worried cos 'if you cant get out there in general you shouldn't BE out there!

I have been surfing for over 6 months and doing ok. The only hassle I have is just waiting for a wave. I just can't seem to sit on the board and wait. All I seem to do is go off to the side and end up looking like a twat. Any helpful tips. I'm using a mini mal at the moment.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Every rectum in Croyde contributes to the sewage problem and the responsability for disposal lies with SSW. They are now offering full UV but the NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) phenemonom is preventing it's contruction. The blame for this is not actually with Paul Yates. As for dog poo floating in the line-up on a weekend that saw epic possibly triple overhead waves at Croyde....I don't think so. Can't paddle 9'1" out? get a real surfboard or go somewhere smaller.

Right this is my problem! I ride a 9'1 long board and when it's bigger than about 4ft as in fri sat and sun this past week i can't get out the back. The thing is i'm dying to get out the back. And the other thing someone should tell that twat Yates to clean his beach up cos pantie liners and dog shit floating across my board really piss me off. You said no bad words but that has to be said!!!! Happy surfing concerned Saunton surfer with long hair and many piercings.

You could improve this site by 1) Cutting the music out. I'm not criticising your taste but it gets kinda annoying. 2) Cutting down the file size, or loosing your animated gifs. Flippin roasting photos of Croyde that day, I went in, it was good. Hope you don't take this the wrong way.
