The Little Pink Shop
Putsborough is situated on the other side of Baggy Point and less than 3/4 mile from CROYDE BAY's Little Pink shop on Moor lane, Croyde. The beach is 3 miles long with the far end being Woolacombe. This vast stretch of sand was voted 7th Best Beach in the World last year.

THE SURF
Baggy Point provides shelter from the prevailing southwesterly winds making Putsborough the place to head for when conditions are southwesterly and onshore.

It only gets truly outstanding a few times a year
In fact the more southerly the wind is, the cleaner Puts will become. Putsburger (as we sometimes affectionately call it) is very much a high tide place.

When Croyde is blown-out on a SW wind head for Puts at High Tide
At low tide even the biggest Croyde waves are small at P-Land (another nickname) but as the tide advances so the surf gets bigger. Around half tide things start to look a lot more interesting. The top half of the beach is more sheltered and if there is plenty of south to the wind it now seems to snake around the hill and go offshore.

A bit rocky at high tide, it's always bigger than it looks.

This is an enlargement of the picture above.
It didn't look double-overhead!
It gets bigger and bigger until the tide turns, then the size drops off rapidly as the tide recedes. Occasionally a good swell coincides with an easterly offshore wind and Putsborough can get quite good. Just a few times a year,if the swell has been broken up a bit out to sea and with an off-shore wind Puts can get classic but such days are rare.

Lefthander in front the car park.
The waves are usually bigger than they look from the car park. Often when you do go in you wish you'd gone in earlier because paddling out would have been easier then! The beach is fairly flat and this produces a more forgiving wave than Croyde.

Spot the unreliable rip.
There is some current but this is normally just a gentle drift sideways along the beach towards Woolacombe. There is a "fictitious" rip running out very close to Baggy Point itself. I say fictitious as often when you are using it to paddle out it has a habit of disappearing completely and leaving you with you back to the rocks as a set comes through!
On very high tides the rocks at the top of the beach tend to get in the way a bit so you just move over and surf in front of the pink house. (There is another way back to the car-park from there). Most people surf in front the car-park but if you prefer solitude even in peak season you can just walk further along those 3 golden miles. Putsborough is an excellent beach for learning to surf.
Putsborough-a beautiful beach.
To the right of the picture lies 3 miles of sand.
Parking- The lands surrounding the beach and the beach itself (to high tide) are privately owned so you have no option but to use the large car-park provided, (with very clean privately owned toilets). There is also a small site for 29 touring caravans (pre-booked only) and a beach shop open in season which serves snacks and hot drinks (located halfway down the steps connecting the car-park to the sands). Although not a licensed campsite vans and campers are allowed to park overnight for a price.

Water Quality- The far end of the beach is Woolacombe which has a blue flag. There is no sewage outfall at Putsborough and the water quality is generally very good. For more information on this subject join Surfers Against Sewage.
More pictures and more Mpeg movies will be added to this page over the winter months when time allows us to gather more footage.
