Saunton sands beach is situated just about two miles from CROYDE BAY SURFING'S "Little Pink Shop" on Moor lane, Croyde. In fact if you arrive in Croyde by the usual route through Barnstaple and Braunton, Saunton is the first beach you will see.

There are several lay-by's on the main road where it is possible to stop, enjoy the panoramic view and of course check the surf down below you.

THE SURF

The view from above is often impressive with swell lines stretching to the distant horizon like so much corduroy. This is because the beach is so incredibly flat. As far as the surf is concerned Saunton is completely the opposite to Croyde. The waves here do not suddenly appear out of deep water and jack over on shallow banks like they do at Croyde. Instead they march steadily in along the gently sloping gradient of sand until the shallowness of the water causes them to spill gracefully from the top. The waves here are generally slow and ideal for learning on.

A lot of people ride longboards here, their extra length and planing ability a distinct advantage on the many less than vertical sections. On the right surfboard rides here can be pretty long. On very small days this may be the novices best bet for a wave that lasts long enough to learn to stand up.

Longboarder on a small day

The beach is about two miles long before it turns up into the river estuary so there is plenty of room for everybody. Being a big flat beach currents are less of a worry but watch out for the rip that runs out next to the rocks especially about two hours after high tide. Lifeguards patrol this beach in peak season.

Plenty of lines!

Parking- You only really have one option, Saunton Sands car-park, the entrance is between Saunton Golf Club and Saunton Sands Hotel. There is the usual beach shop which also sells snacks. The recent dispute with the council over toilets now seems to be resolved and portaloos will back this year pending a more permanent solution.

Water Quality- The far end of the beach is the Taw and Torridge estuary. Despite a lot of work by South West Water on the sewage front this is always going to be a limiting factor to the water quality at Saunton. Rivers contain agricultural run-off and industrial discharges and although great progress has been made Saunton's very position at the mouth of the estuary makes blue flag status at present only a dream.
