Downend Point

"The Point" as it is usually known is basically another low tide spot. It can work up to 2 hours either side of low tide. It is too small under 3 feet but when clean is still surfable when the beach itself becomes maxed out.

The wave itself is a right hander with a good take off section followed by a fat slow section. It speeds up again (a bit) for the much smaller inside section.

DOWNEND POINT GOING OFF!

The current continually drags you quickly past the take off area and behind the peak. Even without this problem there are often frequent wide sets. Easiest entry & exit is by the sand spit/rock finger set up on the wrong side (i.e. Croyde beach side) of the peak or by paddling to & from Croyde beach itself.

The wave breaks over flat rock but be aware that the point itself is effectively an island due to the deep gullies that bisect it. If you end up on that island section the only way in- is back out, not nice in big surf. Boards (and people) washed into the gullies are in big trouble. The Point is best regarded as a LOCALS ONLY spot, surf for experienced surfers only.

More pictures and some Mpeg movies will be added to this page over the winter months when time allows us to gather more footage.
