Surfing is planing on water-however-until you learn to plane, floatation will be needed to hold you up. ENTER...... The Swell 8' Softboard.....
The Swells 8' Softboard is a good choice for beginners as it has maximum floatation. Sometimes it's referred to as the "School board" as it is used by Surf Schools for novices. Although full of float, The Swell board does not plane especially well or even behave like a surfboard really should as it has too much flex, no rails and a rubber single fin whose only function is to keep the back at the back. Therefore for our next board in our hire fleet (which can be ridden by beginners and improvers alike) we have chosen The Tiki Soft-top 7'6" Mini-mal.
SOFT DECK......(needs no wax)
HARD BOTTOM...... Proper rails and a 3 fin set up combine with lightweight epoxy construction which means that it planes and turns from the tail as a proper board should. Even real surfers are impressed with the performance. GONE ARE THE DAYS of the old heavyweight Pop-out moulded boards -at least from our shop.
Available to hire in 3 lengths -7'6" Mini-mal 8' Longboard & 9' Single-fin Mal.
GENERAL NOTES ON BOARDS TO LEARN ON Learners boards should be at least 1' taller than the rider with as much float as possible. The bigger the board is in relation to the rider the easier it will be to stand on but the harder it will be to carry and hang on to in the surf. The construction of the board is secondary to the size. i.e. You can learn on Swells Softboard/Soft-top/Moulded Pop-out/Bic/Wave-tec Hybrid or a real Custom Surfboard as long as the board is big enough for the rider. You CAN learn on a small board but it is much more difficult. Lessons are optional and not compulsory. We think that one good lesson is worthwhile for the safety aspect alone. Soft boards such as the Swell boards are safer for rider and others. Due to the popularity of Surfing in N. Devon we have now voluntarily all but phased out the old heavy moulded pop-out boards. Unfortunately though there are still plenty out there both in hire and privately owned. Croyde can get very crowded at times when there are excellent uncrowded waves to be found at Saunton (2 miles long) and Putsborough (3 miles long).
